Canada Tightens Financial Review for Study Permit Applications: What International Students Need to Know

Canada has introduced another significant update to its study permit assessment process.

As part of updated operational guidance issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on July 24, 2026, visa officers are now instructed to conduct more detailed financial assessments when reviewing study permit applications.

While the minimum proof of funds requirement has not changed, the way IRCC evaluates financial documents has become much more rigorous.

What Has Changed?

Previously, many applicants focused primarily on demonstrating that they met the minimum required amount of available funds.

Under the updated guidance, immigration officers must now evaluate:

  • The source of the funds
  • Whether the money is genuine and legitimately obtained
  • The history and stability of the applicant’s finances
  • Whether the financial documents support the applicant’s ability to pay for:
    • Tuition
    • Living expenses
    • Travel costs
    • Unexpected expenses during their studies

The objective is to ensure applicants have real, sustainable financial support, rather than temporary funds arranged solely for the visa application.

What Has NOT Changed?

It is important to note that IRCC has not increased the required amount of proof of funds.

Applicants must still demonstrate sufficient financial resources for:

  • First-year tuition
  • Living expenses
  • Transportation costs

The financial threshold itself remains unchanged.

The difference is that officers are now placing much greater emphasis on how the funds were accumulated and whether the evidence is credible.

Financial Documents May Receive Greater Scrutiny

Depending on the circumstances, applicants should expect officers to carefully examine documents such as:

  • Six months of bank statements
  • Salary deposits
  • Employment income
  • Business income
  • Fixed deposits

Officers may also compare these documents with previous immigration applications and other information available to IRCC.
